Nutrition & Hydration Week is a national campaign that highlights the importance of food and drink in maintaining health and wellbeing in care settings. It’s a great opportunity to refresh routines, try new ideas, and make small improvements that have a big impact.
Why it matters
Good nutrition and hydration help residents stay energised, maintain a healthy weight, and reduce the risk of illness. In fact, around 1 in 3 people in care settings are at risk of malnutrition, making this a key focus for quality care.
What we do to support nutrition and hydration at Swimbridge?
1. Encourage little and often
- Offer smaller meals and regular snacks
- Provide favourite foods to boost appetite
- Make mealtimes relaxed and social
2. Make drinks easy and appealing
- Offer drinks regularly throughout the day
- Use colourful cups, straws or “mocktails” to encourage interest
- Keep drinks within easy reach at all times
3. Add hydration through food
- Serve foods like melon, cucumber, jelly, soups and smoothies
- Include nourishing snacks like yoghurt or fruit
4. Watch for early signs
- Reduced appetite
- Weight loss or fatigue
- Low mood or confusion
5. Make it fun
- Try themed days (e.g. pancake day or baking activities)
- Host a tea party or group activity
- Involve residents in preparing snacks or baking
