Stress Awareness Month

April is Stress Awareness Month, a time dedicated to recognising the impact stress can have on our daily lives and encouraging open conversations around mental wellbeing.

Working in a care home is incredibly rewarding – but it also comes with unique challenges. Supporting residents, working shifts, and managing responsibilities can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why this month is so important: it reminds us to pause, check in with ourselves, and look out for one another.

Why Stress Awareness Matters in Care

Care professionals give so much of themselves every day. Whether it’s providing emotional support, delivering hands-on care, or simply being there for residents and their families, the role requires compassion, patience, and resilience.

However, constant demands can sometimes lead to stress, fatigue, or burnout if not managed properly.

Recognising stress early can help prevent it from building up. Some common signs include:

  • Feeling more tired than usual
  • Difficulty switching off after shifts
  • Feeling overwhelmed or irritable
  • Changes in sleep or appetite

Being aware of these signs, in ourselves and our colleague can make a big difference.

Creating a Supportive Environment

A positive and supportive workplace is essential in care settings. When teams feel valued and supported, it not only improves staff wellbeing but also enhances the quality of care provided to residents.

Simple actions can help create this environment:

  • Checking in with colleagues during shifts
  • Encouraging open and honest conversations
  • Taking breaks when needed
  • Supporting each other during busy or challenging days

Sometimes, just knowing someone is there to listen can make all the difference.

How We Support Our Staff

At Swimbridge we understand the importance of supporting our team and are taking extra steps this month to support staff wellbeing by sharing helpful resources and guidance.

You may notice:

  • Wellbeing information displayed on staff noticeboards
  • Emails with tips, advice, and support resources
  • Signposting to organisations that offer additional help

We encourage all team members to take a moment to read and make use of these resources—they’re there to support you.

Our teams are at the heart of everything we do, and their wellbeing matters.

Small Steps to Manage Stress

Managing stress doesn’t always require big changes – small, consistent actions can have a real impact:

  • Taking a few minutes to reset during your shift
  • Getting fresh air or a short walk when possible
  • Talking to someone you trust
  • Prioritising rest on your days off

Even small moments of self-care can help you feel more balanced and recharged.

“Be the Change” This April

This year’s theme, “Be the Change”, encourages us all to take small steps towards improving wellbeing – both for ourselves and those around us.

This could be as simple as:

  • Asking a colleague how they’re really feeling
  • Offering support during a busy shift
  • Taking time to look after your own wellbeing without guilt

Together, these small actions help build a stronger, more supportive community.

At Swimbridge Nursing home we provide a wide range of activities for all our residents. For more information on our activities go to www.swimbridgehouse.co.uk/activities/
